Overcoming Limitations and Learning to be Patient with Yourself ![]() Paddye recently accomplished a personal best that surprised even herself. It involved wall balls... 50 of them. But that's not the full story; she got through those 50 wall balls pain free. Joining CrossFit as a means to continue pursuing her love for Judo, she found a second home, but not without its own frustrations. Through her one-on-one sessions with Coach Steve, Paddye has overcome previous injuries, faced her fears, and developed a sense of patience with herself that's allowed her to enjoy the whole process. "I couldn’t have done it without the good humoured and straightforward guidance I receive in my classes with Steve. I tried CrossFit a couple of times and felt frustrated because I couldn’t get beyond some injuries. Steve has helped me work around or push past those limitations and find other ways to achieve my goals. Originally, I started CrossFit as a way to get back to being active in Judo. I’ve discovered another passion in CrossFit. The culture of camaraderie, energy, and good humour - the effort is what counts - is empowering. Wall balls... I’ve dreaded them since my first introduction to CrossFit. Whew. Who knew I could do fifty?" Steve has helped me work around or push past those limitations and find other ways to achieve my goals. Paddye's story doesn't sound too unfamiliar. Injuries are frustrating from a day-to-day perspective, and even more so when it stops you from doing what you love. For those of you unsure of your next steps, Paddye has some solid advice on just being honest with yourself and those around you. Communicate what you're going through, and acknowledge the real reasons that are holding you back. You never know what kind of revelations may come from it. Remember, fitness and happiness has no deadline.
"The thing I learned in my first two forays into CrossFit was that I would have been more successful had I voiced my frustrations with my limitations immediately. I was embarrassed at not being as fit as I had been before I’d wrecked my shoulder and hip joint. (And here, I have to say Liv was a miracle worker in rehabilitating those joints). I finally mentioned it to Adam one day and he said, “everyone here has limitations. We figure out a way to work around them”. That’s when I realized that all of my limitations weren’t just joint related. My best decision was signing up for a ten class introduction with a personal trainer who pushed me beyond my fears."

Client Story of the Month!1 - What has changed in your life outside of the gym since coming to CrossFit Closer? In a strange way, everything has changed in my life since starting. I have gone through a couple of rough years and let myself sink into a dark place, filled with negative thoughts and a bad outlook. I had trouble focusing and always seemed to be short tempered and grumpy. It started to change when I first found CrossFit, it really peaked my interest and since starting at Closer in January, I have found myself in a much better mood, looking forward to the next day, laughing more with my kids, sleeping better, better able to focus at work and on other tasks and just generally being in a better mood.
3 - What’s your favourite thing about being at CrossFit Closer?
There are so many reason to enjoy about being at the Box, but I guess it’s the people for me. There is just something I enjoy about seeing people work really hard to accomplish the workout and the support and advice I have received has been amazing. I also have to mention the staff, all of you have been incredible in both encouragement and tips to help make me better at all this crazy stuff. It has been a wonderful experience so far and I am looking forward to much more! |
