Overcoming Limitations and Learning to be Patient with Yourself
Paddye recently accomplished a personal best that surprised even herself. It involved wall balls... 50 of them. But that's not the full story; she got through those 50 wall balls pain free. Joining CrossFit as a means to continue pursuing her love for Judo, she found a second home, but not without its own frustrations. Through her one-on-one sessions with Coach Steve, Paddye has overcome previous injuries, faced her fears, and developed a sense of patience with herself that's allowed her to enjoy the whole process.
"I couldn’t have done it without the good humoured and straightforward guidance I receive in my classes with Steve. I tried CrossFit a couple of times and felt frustrated because I couldn’t get beyond some injuries. Steve has helped me work around or push past those limitations and find other ways to achieve my goals. Originally, I started CrossFit as a way to get back to being active in Judo. I’ve discovered another passion in CrossFit. The culture of camaraderie, energy, and good humour - the effort is what counts - is empowering. Wall balls... I’ve dreaded them since my first introduction to CrossFit. Whew. Who knew I could do fifty?"
Steve has helped me work around or push past those limitations and find other ways to achieve my goals.
Paddye's story doesn't sound too unfamiliar. Injuries are frustrating from a day-to-day perspective, and even more so when it stops you from doing what you love. For those of you unsure of your next steps, Paddye has some solid advice on just being honest with yourself and those around you. Communicate what you're going through, and acknowledge the real reasons that are holding you back. You never know what kind of revelations may come from it. Remember, fitness and happiness has no deadline.
"The thing I learned in my first two forays into CrossFit was that I would have been more successful had I voiced my frustrations with my limitations immediately. I was embarrassed at not being as fit as I had been before I’d wrecked my shoulder and hip joint. (And here, I have to say Liv was a miracle worker in rehabilitating those joints). I finally mentioned it to Adam one day and he said, “everyone here has limitations. We figure out a way to work around them”. That’s when I realized that all of my limitations weren’t just joint related. My best decision was signing up for a ten class introduction with a personal trainer who pushed me beyond my fears."
Client Story of the Month!
1 - What has changed in your life outside of the gym since coming to CrossFit Closer?
In a strange way, everything has changed in my life since starting. I have gone through a couple of rough years and let myself sink into a dark place, filled with negative thoughts and a bad outlook. I had trouble focusing and always seemed to be short tempered and grumpy. It started to change when I first found CrossFit, it really peaked my interest and since starting at Closer in January, I have found myself in a much better mood, looking forward to the next day, laughing more with my kids, sleeping better, better able to focus at work and on other tasks and just generally being in a better mood.
3 - What’s your favourite thing about being at CrossFit Closer?
There are so many reason to enjoy about being at the Box, but I guess it’s the people for me. There is just something I enjoy about seeing people work really hard to accomplish the workout and the support and advice I have received has been amazing. I also have to mention the staff, all of you have been incredible in both encouragement and tips to help make me better at all this crazy stuff. It has been a wonderful experience so far and I am looking forward to much more!
I knew I needed a change in with my lifestyle. Being a mom of a 3 year old, I knew if I didn't get back to being fit and eating healthy, that this would teach my kid unhealthy behaviours.
I have been to a CrossFit Box for a short duration before, so I knew going back to CrossFit would be the right choice for me instead of a traditional gym as I like working as a team and the competitive spirit!
Being new to this area, I researched CrossFit gym's that were close proximity to my home; CrossFit Closer had the best ratings, so I called and met Michaela, had a tour and immediately I knew I wanted to join!
CFC has changed my everyday life in a myriad of ways! I've only been a member for almost 2 month's and I lost over 10 lbs, I can pick-up my little guy without grunting, I am making a cognizant effort with my nutrition (I have actually started my Nutrition Diploma) and my hamstring injury is actually feeling better!!
I have been sharing my achievements with my family and friends with great hope they will join the CrossFit community (with the obvious emphasis with joining CrossFit Closer :) ) as it has made such a positive difference in my life thus far!
I tell them Crossfit Closer Coaches not only make people stronger for everyday life situations, but they can also help people grow!
CrossFit Closer is a place where everyone is welcome; whether you are a seasoned veteran, newbie, big, small, it doesn't matter as there is no judgement, only positive encouragement/guidance and a ton of sweat!
What brought you to the CrossFit Closer family in the first place?
My shoes. I bought these shoes because they were on sale and everyone kept asking if I did CrossFit. I didn’t wanna feel like a phony so I signed up.
What's your proudest moment so far?
Doing 3 HSPU in a row. I haven’t been able to do it again but it’s okay because I got it on video and it’s on Facebook and that's all that matters.
What's your funniest CrossFit Closer story or experience?
Hearing coach Steve say "take a hard close look at Diana's snatch"
1. What brought you to CrossFit Closer?
I have always been a runner and a once in a while gym goer and I was looking for something different to compliment my running and give me more balance and strength. To be honest, I really didn't know very much about it when I joined!
2. How has CrossFit Closer changed your everyday life?
In so many ways. Not only do I feel stronger than I have ever felt, but I have more motivation to keep improving and pushing myself at higher level of intensity than I thought I had! My husband joined shortly after I did, and now we have something to talk about over dinner besides the kids. :) My 11 year old son also joined to get in shape for hockey, and not only has his fitness improved but he has a new found confidence that he carries into everything he does.
3. How would you describe CrossFit Closer to someone interested in joining?
At first it may feel like you have entered a strange place, full of curious rituals (you want me to sit in a circle? what, is this kindergarten?) and a language you can't understand (emom, amprap, wod), but then you start to see all of the wonderful people who greet you by name and encourage you to do things you thought only other people could do. CrossFit Closer is like a family, complete with kids and pets!
